Self-sufficiency doesn’t start with a large vegetable garden, but with one plant. This week you take the step from consumer to producer. Small, inexpensive and perfectly achievable, even on a windowsill or balcony.

Why this is important

Anyone who can grow something themselves is less dependent on shops. Herbs and simple vegetables provide not only food, but also confidence. You learn how plants respond to water, light and care. That is knowledge that always comes in handy.

What you need

A pot or container with holes at the bottom, potting compost, seeds or a plant and water. Choose something that’s almost impossible to get wrong: basil, parsley, chives, mint, radish or lettuce.

How to go about it

Fill the pot with potting compost, plant the seeds or the plant and add water. Put the pot in a bright spot, but not in full midday sun. Water regularly, but don’t make the soil waterlogged. Check it briefly every day. That’s enough.

Extra tip

Start with one pot. More is not better. Those who try too much at once give up. Success motivates.

Checklist week 14

✅ One pot or container placed
✅ Simple herb or vegetable chosen
✅ Daily brief check

Conclusion

Growing something yourself changes your mindset. You realise that food doesn’t come from the shop, but from attention and time. This one pot is the beginning of real self-reliance.
