REVIEW. Kubotan keyring for self-defence

A kubotan is a multifunctional self-defence weapon in the form of a keyring. We ordered and used a pack of two – a silver and a black one. Below you can read our findings.

I discovered the Kubotan when I was searching the internet for legal self-defence tools. Via Google I found information about the Kubotan and on bol.com I found two affordable examples. We ordered them and a few days later they arrived in the letterbox.

The kubotans each arrived separately in a plastic bag.

Technical information

We received a black and grey kubotan in a small package, each with a key ring attached.

How to use a kubotan

You can use this self-defence tool in different ways. You can stab or press on pressure points, forcing attackers to immediately release their grip. With your keyring attached you can even use it as a small flail. The kubotan is so effective because you concentrate all your force on one point. This allows you to inflict a lot of pain on your attacker with relatively little force.

Focus mainly on the sensitive parts of the body:

  • Forearms and wrists
  • Hands
  • Legs
  • Ribs
  • Groin
  • Neck

Please note: The aim should be to cause sufficient pain so that you can escape, not to cause permanent damage.

You can also use it as a ‘flail’, but then you have to be careful that the attacker cannot grab your keys.

What we thought of it

Positive feedback online

On the internet the reviews of the Kubotan were mostly positive. “Put it in your jacket pocket when you go out for example”, someone wrote. “Sturdy and fits well in the hand”, was another response.

Our opinion

We too immediately found that this kubotan fits well in the hand. The ribbed structure may look a bit strange, but when you hold it in your hand you feel that they are handy. The finish is also neat. We have had the keyring for a few weeks now and the colour does not come off. The kubotan is on the heavier side, but not ‘annoyingly’ heavy. Sometimes the keyring does feel a bit too large to put in your trouser pocket.
