Self-sufficient in 52 weeks (11) – Learn to make fire

Fire is warmth, light and safety. And it’s easier than you think. Learn it yourself quickly and easily.

Why this is important

With fire you can cook, purify water and keep yourself warm. Without electricity or gas you are completely dependent on it.

How to get started

Practise with matches and lighters. Also try a firesteel or magnesium block. Learn which materials burn well: cotton wool with petroleum jelly, wood shavings, dry grass. Do it outside in a safe place, and always with fire extinguisher at hand.
