Essential emergency equipment for your car: be prepared for any situation

It may seem an unlikely scenario, but in the current geopolitical situation, nothing is certain. What if you suddenly have to flee by car, for example towards the South of France? Or if you break down in a remote location? Then emergency equipment comes in handy. An accident, severe weather or another unexpected situation can always occur. According to the Belgian National Crisis Centre, it is therefore crucial to have an emergency kit in your car.

Mandatory requirements for the car

According to Belgian law, you must always have a number of essential documents in your car:

  • Driving licence
  • Insurance certificate (digital or on paper)
  • Registration certificate
  • MOT certificate

In addition, it is mandatory to carry some safety items:

  • First aid kit with plasters, sterile bandages and other supplies
  • Fire extinguisher (must be within reach and not past its expiry date)
  • Warning triangle, to be placed in case of breakdown or accident
  • High-visibility vest, at least one per vehicle

Recommended emergency kit for the car

A well-prepared emergency kit helps you with breakdowns, emergency situations or extreme weather conditions, making you less dependent on external help. Those who are prepared for the worst themselves are also better able to help other people.

In addition to the mandatory equipment, it is wise to keep extra emergency supplies in your car. The National Crisis Centre recommends including the following items in your emergency equipment:

  • Water bottles and non-perishable food (for example cereal bars)
  • Torch and spare batteries
  • Jump leads for vehicles with a combustion engine
  • GPS device or road maps: a GPS device is certainly more reliable than any smartphone in remote areas
  • Pocket knife
  • Spare wheel or tyre repair kit and a jack
  • Duct tape

Draw up an evacuation plan

An emergency situation requires a well-thought-out strategy. Here are some tips:

  1. Stay informed via reliable channels such as radio, TV or smartphone. Consider a battery-powered emergency radio in case the power goes out.
  2. Determine your destination: Know where you are going, whether it is a family member, friend or a safe shelter.
  3. Plan multiple routes: Avoid risk areas such as flood-prone regions or forests in case of wildfire danger.
  4. Know alternative shelters such as schools, offices, churches or sports complexes.
  5. Communicate with others: Talk to neighbours, friends and emergency services to obtain current information and work together.
